Mark Consuelos shares surprising update on Kelly Ripa following her gum graft procedure — what he said

Kelly Ripa’s temporary disappearance from “Live with Kelly and Mark” has left fans wondering about her recovery, but her husband Mark Consuelos has continued to share updates about how she is doing behind the scenes. His latest comments revealed just how challenging her recent dental procedure has been — and how difficult it has been for one of television’s most talkative personalities to stay quiet.

The longtime host recently underwent gum graft surgery, forcing her to step away from her usual role on the daytime talk show while she focuses on healing. Consuelos first explained her absence during the Monday, July 27, 2026 episode, telling viewers that Ripa was recovering and following strict instructions from her dentist.

Although her representative initially said she would miss only the following week of shows, reports later confirmed that Ripa’s recovery would require a longer break. Entertainment Weekly reported that she was expected to miss at least three weeks of tapings, with several celebrity guests stepping in to join Consuelos during her absence.

Among those filling her seat were Mila Kunis, Pamela Adlon, Scott Foley, Jenna Dewan, Michelle Buteau, and Carrie Coon. After the guest-host appearances, the show was expected to move into its annual summer break period, with reruns replacing new episodes.

However, while Ripa was away from the spotlight, Consuelos made sure fans knew how she was handling the recovery — and one detail immediately stood out. Her dentist had reportedly instructed her not to speak while her gums healed.

For most people, that might be a manageable request. For Ripa, who built her career on quick jokes, energetic conversations, and constant interaction with guests, staying silent was always going to be a major challenge.

During the show, Consuelos joked that he had been trying to make sure his wife followed all of her dentist’s instructions. Guest co-host Kevin Jonas even pointed out how difficult that must have been, saying that asking Ripa not to talk was probably “the hardest thing she’s ever done.”

A gum graft procedure is typically performed when gum tissue has receded, exposing parts of the tooth’s root. During the treatment, healthy tissue is placed over the affected area to help protect the tooth, reduce sensitivity, and improve overall oral health.

The recovery period often requires patients to follow careful guidelines, including eating soft foods and avoiding anything that could disturb the healing area. For Ripa, that meant limiting her usual habits and allowing her mouth time to recover.

Despite the discomfort, she still received some support from friends and family. Consuelos shared that they had ice cream delivered from friends in Palm Springs, giving Ripa a sweet option that worked with her restricted diet.

The following day, Consuelos offered another update about his wife’s condition. He explained that she was beginning to feel better and had started talking again — although not exactly in the way one might expect.

When Jonas asked whether Ripa had been cleared to speak, Consuelos admitted that she probably was not supposed to yet. He then explained that she had found a creative solution: she was speaking without moving her bottom lip.

The unusual technique appeared to be Ripa’s attempt to communicate while still minimizing movement around the surgical area. While viewers never learned exactly what she was saying, the story perfectly captured her determination not to remain completely silent.

Beyond the humor, Consuelos also made it clear that the procedure had been genuinely painful for his wife. He explained that Ripa is normally someone with an unusually high tolerance for discomfort and often avoids using Novocaine during dental appointments.

“She famously doesn’t feel pain,” he said, explaining that Ripa typically handles dental procedures without numbing medication. Because of that, he admitted that seeing her struggle after this surgery showed him that the recovery was truly difficult.

“This one hurts, so I know it’s bad,” Consuelos revealed.

The couple has often shared personal experiences, including health-related moments, with their audience through humor and honesty. In the past, they have even joked about comparing their own medical procedures.

During a 2024 episode of “Live,” Consuelos humorously suggested that his foot surgery may have been more painful than Ripa’s experiences with childbirth. While acknowledging that Ripa’s three C-sections were extremely painful, he jokingly argued that foot surgery had its own challenges.

Ripa quickly responded with her trademark humor, questioning how often he had to care for his toe compared with what she endured after childbirth.

Their playful exchanges have become part of what fans enjoy about their relationship, but this latest situation appears to be different. Even someone as resilient as Ripa has needed time to recover.

For now, the television host is focused on healing, while Consuelos continues guiding the show with help from guest co-hosts. And although her dentist’s orders temporarily forced her into silence, fans now know that even a restricted Ripa has found a way to make herself heard.
